Work NOT Play!

Dr. Maria Montessori was adamant that what occurs in her schools was WORK and not PLAY. Just because the apparatus is child-sized and looks like blocks…and fun…does not make the materials TOYS. It is most important to realize that the WORK that is being done is the “construction” of the child’s mind! Nothing is in the classroom that was not observed to be beneficial toward a specific goal. We’ve mentioned before the role of “indirect preparation” in many of our lessons.

So, we refer to the lessons as “work”, and we hope you, as parents, reinforce this when you speak with your children. They do not come to school to play but to work!

The practical life lessons all evolved from Dr. Montessori’s observations that young children intensely desire to do the work that they see the adults around them doing (preparing food, cleaning, handiwork). Each “work” is presented in a step-by-step fashion, breaking the action into segments that are easy to repeat and practice. Most importantly, all the tools are child-sized, making it both easier to manage and very appealing to young hands.

Unlike adults, who tire after a full morning of “work”, our children emerge from their work refreshed and happy. This is because they are actually fulfilling an inner need—to use their hands in the formation of their minds!

Of course, you know what they say a bout all work and no play……below you see a glimpse of a game honoring Dr. Seuss, done as an afternoon indoor recess pursuit:“pin” the green eggs and ham on the plate!

Spring Break begins after school Friday, March 23, and lasts until Monday, April 9, when school resumes!

Last Day of School will be Friday, May 25. (More about this later.)
